Darren Shaw

DarrenI started playing football at the age of 8 and quickly discovered a passion for goalkeeping and as with most young goalkeepers a love for throwing myself around in the mud as well as the opportunity to be the hero!

Initially I was playing with a local Sunday league team in Lancashire but by the age of 9 I had been invited for trials with Everton and went on to spend around 9 months at the club. Even at this early age there was a huge difference in coaching between a professional club with dedicated goalkeeper coaches and my local team.

Throughout my teens I played at the top level of local football representing my town, county and league representative sides at various age groups whilst continuing to develop technically as a goalkeeper.

Around 20 years old I signed a semi pro contract with Warrington Town in the Evostik league (Step 8 of the football pyramid). Unfortunately there was no goalkeeping coach at the club so we developed our own sessions and I helped out coaching the younger goalkeepers which is where I got my first taste of coaching others.

Due to family and work commitments I had to reduce the amount of time I could commit to football so left Warrington and spent a few years playing with friends in the Cheshire league for Middlewich Town and Rylands FC where again I helped out developing the youth and reserve goalkeepers.

In July 2015 I started coaching with Chris at Pro1Keeper which has provided me with a fantastic opportunity to work with a wide range of goalkeepers from all over the North West as well as continually developing my coaching ability.

The multi-dimensional sessions each week allow us to work on specific goalkeeping related topics that are always related to real in game situations. Importantly they develop not only goalkeeping technique but a true understanding of the game and the ever changing role of the modern day keeper.

Away from the pitch I also run a very popular goalkeeping website and community which was created to help keepers all over the world to develop and help each other.

The site has Goalkeeping Guides, Glove Reviews, Interviews with Professional Goalkeepers and all the Latest Goalkeeping News!
